Pacific Northwest - Corporate Childcare Centers

Project:

Nike - Corporate Childcare Centers

client:

endeavor schools

date:

2018-2020

Scope:

Terralab was tasked with creating two world-class childcare facilities near the campus of a Nike, a corporate apparel company located in the Pacific northwest of the U.S. Approximately (1) acre of each site was dedicated to outdoor learning environements. Nearly 1,000 children were slated to attend the two schools. The projects were performed as part of a partnership with a national school developer/operator and the corporate entity.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and corporate overhaul, the project was scuttled prior to being constructed.

Impact:

Each site has its own unique character and outdoor spaces, as each building is an adaptive re-use of a commercial building. A credit union headquarters sits near a natural area on one site, while the other site is part of an office complex.

Our work entailed the creation of four disctinct zones for each age group. The youngest kids were newborns, and the oldest were pre-k, presenting quite a variety of play and educational features. Fully custom play features were designed to capture the imagination of a child's mind, ranging from nature inspired custom wood crawling elements, all the way to a multi-story play tower that punched through a proposed second story roof play area. Existing trees were desgined to be worked with, and native and adaptive plants were to be used. A large focus was on making the outdoor areas very comfortable for all seasons and also utlizing sustainable materials and best practices.
